The strong link between High Energy Physics and Medicine has always been one that inspires innovation. Hybrid pixel detectors were developed to record the position and arrival time of each track coming from the LHC particle detectors. The Medipix Collaborations have adapted the same technology to x-ray imaging. Medipix is an integrated circuit connected to a sensitive element to form a small particle detector. Unlike conventional x-ray imaging detectors, each x-ray photon is individually detected and the associated energy measurement allows the production of noise-free ‘colour’ x-ray images, with prospects of high resolution spectroscopic x-ray imaging.
